My absolute favourite thing in this is the Water Horses themselves and how they related to their humans. Anything about riding and handling them, how different they are to Dove, anything that happens with Corr and Dove after book canon ends… new adventures or slices of life for them.

Maybe years down the line with a foal from Corr and Dove? Or the next years races and how that feels for Sean now Corr can’t run?

It breaks my heart that Laurent’s only sexual experience before Damen is being abused by his uncle. I want to see him become able to let down his guard a little and let Damen in, open up to Damen about his past. I’d love to see them being sweet, gentle, and kind to one another and just having room to breathe post-canon and heal from canon trauma. My headcanon is that Laurent relied on riding and his horse as his only escape from court intrigue and his uncle pre-canon - which of course makes the canon loss of that horse extra traumatic. In canon, Damen mentally castigates Laurent for not treating his horse right when the regent poisons her. What if instead, he notices Laurent taking special care of his horse (perhaps Laurent doesn't know he's being observed) and that is the moment Damen starts to respect him?

I love Dagobaz and I love how much Ash loves him. What is Dagobaz' perspective on any canon events? What if Dagobaz is actually a unicorn or pegasus (and that's why Ash is the only one that can tame him), how does that change how they approach the rescue mission to Bhithor? Some other themes I enjoy from this book are Ash's autistic traits (black-and-white thinking, obsession with justice & fairness, directness, intense interests), his split sense of self/not belonging as an Indian or as an Englishman, his wonder and worship of the Dur Khaima, his love of Anjuli, his relationship with Wally, Sarji, Gul Baz, Mahdoo, Koda Dad, and Zarin, and the vivid historic setting - fic that incorporates any of those elements would be very welcome!
